ABOUT THE THERAPIST
Hi, I’m Annie O’Brien, a Psychotherapist, Counsellor, and Clinical Hypnotherapist based in Carrickboy, Longford. I hold a Masters in Integrative Counselling & Psychotherapy from DCU and TPTI, and I’m an accredited member of the Irish Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (IACP). With over fifteen years of experience as a Psychotherapist and more than twenty years as a Clinical Hypnotherapist, I’ve had the privilege of working with individuals, couples and teenagers as they navigate anxiety, grief, trauma and those quiet turning points when life no longer feels the way it once did. My approach is depth-oriented... moving beyond surface coping strategies to reach the root cause of psychological discomfort. Alongside my clinical practice, I’m also a podcaster, writer & lifelong student of astrology, weaving together psychology, story and soulful insight. My astrology work blends precise chart analysis with psychoanalytic depth, therapeutic presence, and spiritual intelligence. These sessions are not predictive or fortune-telling. Psychotherapy & Counselling
The type of therapy that I offer is Integrative Psychotherapy and Counselling. This draws on many techniques from multiple schools of psychotherapeutic thought. It is flexible and engaging, tailored to the needs of the individual. Rather than focus on one therapeutic modality, one receives the benefit of a wide range of therapeutic approaches and techniques - Person Centred, Humanistic, Psychosynthesis, Psychodynamic, Relational, Life Stage Development, Mindfulness, Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT Trauma Therapy), Cognitive Behavioural, Solution Focused, Acceptance and Commitment, Transpersonal, Process Oriented, Ericksonian to name a few. What is beneficial for one individual is not necessarily beneficial for the next person. Comfort and privacy are key. The space provided is warm and inviting as you can see by the photograph of the therapy room.

What is Psychotherapy?
What is Psychotherapy and how can it help you? Psychotherapy and counselling overlap. The terms are inter-changeable, however, the main difference between a Psychotherapist and a Counsellor is the level of education and training the therapist has. Psychotherapy is essentially a long term process that allows you to uncover and discover more of the Self, how you came to be, feel, do, act and think the way you do thus creating a deeper understanding and relationship with the Self It's purpose is to strengthen the individual, to create more awareness and presence. This leads to an individual becoming more autonomous and living a more conscious mindful life. Essentially, one feels more empowered with many broader perspectives on life issues and processes leading to the realisation that there is always choice and one can always choose to grow and evolve in the school of life. Counselling is a process whereby one is listened to in a non-judgemental empathetic manner. All talking therapies employ counselling as an essential skill. This creates and atmosphere of openness and creativity where one can feel completely free to express and explore their life experience, deepen their level of self awareness and self compassion. This leads to insights, change, hopefulness, a flexible and adaptive perspective. It cultivates resilience and self empowerment.

The gentle and sensitive companionship of an empathetic stance… provides illumination and healing. Clinical Hypnotherapy
Hypnosis is not magic nor is it a panacea. It happens constantly and ordinarily to every person on the planet daily.Hypnosis is a naturalistic state of being. We all go in and out of trance everyday, multiple times.When we use this heightened state of awareness for clinical therapeutic purposes we bypass the critical analytic conscious mind and utilise the resources of the automatic subconscious mind. This relaxed state of heightened focussed awareness creates a state of complete absorption and simultaneously concentrated awareness that facilitates a process of deep learning and un-learning. Ultimately hypnosis is a creative state of learning what you wish to learn in a meditative reflective state of mind. Hypnotherapy is only utilised as a therapeutic intervention as part of an integrative psychotherapeutic treatment programme. Please note - I offer Hypnotherapy as a stand alone treatment.
